Special Recognition Award
See below the shortlisted individuals for the Special Recognition Award, and the nominations that got them shortlisted! Each and everyone of these businesses deserves a big thank you for everything they provide to the Colchester Community.
The owner genuinely cares about her clients. She just wants people to feel comfortable in their skin, and provides a personalised service without just trying to sell treatments like other clinics tend to. She is kind, caring and professional. I asked her for help when a treatment went wrong (I got the treatment elsewhere and received no aftercare). She took the time out of her day to assess me free of charge, reassure me and physically drove me to a hospital. I didn't even know her at this point. It was so kind and above and beyond what I would have expected. She regularly checks in on clients to see how their recovery is doing and is on incredibly knowledgeable and professional.
The guys at hair pimps are always working non stop. On the day that their salon isn't open (Monday) they are at a nursing home providing haircuts for the elderly. They have a very welcoming and inclusive space where anyone is welcome. They are neurodivergent friendly, and have become popular among parents for children with Autism. Charles and Josh just get it. Their talent is unmatched and they make it their mission to get to know you, make sure you feel comfortable and give you an amazing hair cut. They provide a great sense of community along the street and provide a welcoming and friendly service for all. Their focus on inclusivity and community makes them much more than just a hairdressers.
The Manor Health and Wellness Centre has a team of 20 therapists and teachers all who have worked so incredibly hard throughout the past three years since we opened in September 2019. We came together to offer space, a safe haven for the Colchester community to recieve the very best in holistic healthcare all under one roof. Throughout the pandemic we had to open and close frequently but we all stuck together and supported each other and provided as many of our services online so that our clients and students could still receive support. We have since grown from strength to strength and as a team pride ourselves in providing the best possible client experience. The business is centered around the local community being able to easily access affordable complimentary healthcare and we feel that everyone of us here at The Manor provides this.
This business not only is humble, but supports other independent businesses in many ways. They recently have spoken out on the BBC about how the cost of living and covid have both affected small businesses and aimed to encourage people to go local, and go to small businesses. They make everything in store by hand and strive to suit everyone’s needs. They are honest and respectable and can justify their products, each member of staff 9/10 know every product they sell inside and out. A super homely feeling family business that is inclusive of everyone and represents why colchester need more small independent businesses.
Aleksandra (Ola) is the General Manager for Wagamama restaurant in Colchester. During the 5 years we have been open , Ola has strived to be a great leader, developing her people, some of whom have gone on to manage their own branches. Looking after her staff by offering support to those in need, wether it is a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on or helpline numbers for mental health. She even carried my bag for me when we had to travel to Manchester as I couldn't lift anything after an operation. Ola has opened our restaurant as a safe space for the LGBTQ community. Last year Wagamama was a meeting place during Pride, and she provided breakfast. She has organised multiple events for charities, including Age Concern and notably a Christmas party for Ukrainian refugees where everyone had a meal and received a gift. We also do food drops to businesses around town to brighten their day. Last year our Branch won Restaurant of the year within our company, and Ola was quick to share this accolade, not one to accept all the praise. A true leader.
