We Create: Shining a Light on Colchester's Creative Talent

Colchester venues offer a diverse range of photography opportunities, from historic landmarks to vibrant cultural hubs. For many in our creative community, city venues play an important role in their creative stories; they provide a meeting place, spark the imagination, and help individuals to develop their artistry.

Rob Holmes chose the city as the backdrop to his latest project. We Create is a personal photography project designed to capture authentic portraits of individuals from the creative community in and around Colchester. Each photograph aims to evoke a sense of the subjects creativity and personality, while telling the story of how the city, and its environment impacts and inspires.

I feel honoured and blessed to have met some amazingly talented individuals, each with their own story about how creativity helps them navigate life’s challenges, shape their identities, and build successful careers. - Rob Holmes, Photographer

This project was supported by Colchester Arts Centre, who kindly provided their award winning venue as a location for some of the shoots.

Three Wise Monkeys, Queen Street Brewhouse and Colchester Castle were also praised for their hospitality.

Colchester Castle Grounds

One of the standout locations for photography in Colchester is the Colchester Castle grounds. With its ancient ruins, lush greenery, and stunning architecture, the castle grounds provide a beautiful backdrop for a variety of photography styles. Whether you're interested in capturing the grandeur of the castle itself, or the serene beauty of the surrounding gardens, this historic spot has a lot to offer to photographers of all abilities.

It may be one of the most photographed areas of the city, what do you think?

Three Wise Monkeys and Other Monkey Brewing

For those looking for a more urban setting, Three Wise Monkeys and its neighbour Other Monkey Brewing are great options. This adjoining duo are known for their vibrant atmosphere, and gorgeous brewery backdrop. The colourful graffiti walls, abundance of natural light, and accomodating staff ensure that any photographer will feel at home.

The building's stunning architecture, atmospheric lighting (and amazing restrooms!) make it a captivating subject for photography, whether you're interested in capturing the beauty of the space itself or the energy of the events taking place within its walls.
