Into Your Summer Event Guide to Colchester

Written by: Amelia Kemp

Summer in Colchester is looking big!

Castle Park is set to welcome food festivals, live music, family days out, open-air concerts and some seriously good festival energy across the season. From ALB Festival and Ibiza Orchestra Experience to Sausage and Cider Festival, Summer in Nashville, Colchester Carnival and the Colchester Castle Summer Series, the city centre is going to be busy, buzzing and full of reasons to make a proper day of it. 🎶

This guide is not just about what’s on. It’s about everything around it. Where to eat before you head in, where to go for drinks after, where to stay if you’re making a weekend of it, how to plan parking, how to keep cool and how to make your visit as smooth, safe and accessible as possible. 💛

Make a day of it in the city centre ☀️

One of the best things about summer events in Colchester is how close everything is.

Castle Park sits right by the city centre, which means you can turn an event into a full day out without needing to rush around. Grab brunch before gates open, have a wander through the shops, meet friends for a drink, book dinner before the music starts, or stay over and make the most of the whole weekend.

If you’re coming in for one of the big Castle Park dates, it’s worth planning your day around the city rather than heading straight to the entrance. Colchester has independent cafés, restaurants, pubs, bars, hotels, shops and cultural spots all within walking distance, so there’s plenty to enjoy before and after the main event.

Where to eat before a Castle Park event 🍔

A long day of live music, dancing, walking and sunshine needs proper fuel.

If you want a relaxed meal before heading into the park, the city centre has plenty of choice, from casual cafés and family-friendly restaurants to bigger sit-down meals and group-friendly spots. You’ll find everything from Italian and Turkish food to pub classics, Pan-Pacific dining, steak, noodles, pizza, desserts and quick bites.

For something easy before an event, look for places close to the High Street, North Hill, Head Street, Culver Street, Queen Street or the Dutch Quarter. These are all handy for moving on towards Castle Park afterwards.

If you’re visiting on a major event day, book ahead where you can. Restaurants and bars are likely to be busier than usual, especially before evening concerts, weekend festivals and large family events. It’s also worth checking opening times, menus and dietary options in advance so everyone in your group is covered.

You can browse places to eat and drink in the InColchester App directory before you visit.

Where to drink before or after 🍻

Pre-event drink? Post-event catch-up? “One quick cocktail” that somehow becomes a whole evening? Colchester has you covered.

The city centre has pubs, cocktail bars, live music venues, sports bars and late-night spots, making it easy to choose the mood that works for your group. You might want somewhere relaxed before the gates open, somewhere lively after the show, or somewhere with food and drinks together so no one has to split the group.

On bigger event nights, places near the High Street, Head Street, North Hill and the surrounding lanes are likely to be popular, so it’s a good idea to decide where you’re meeting before you arrive. Pick a clear meeting point, check closing times, and remember that some venues may be operating different hours around major events.

And if you’re drinking alcohol, pace yourself, eat properly and drink water too. Future you will be very grateful.

Staying overnight in Colchester 🛏️

If you’re travelling in for a concert, festival or full weekend of events, staying in the city centre can make the whole experience easier.

Colchester has a mix of hotels and places to stay, including historic buildings, boutique hotels and central accommodation close to restaurants, bars, shops and Castle Park. Staying nearby means you can enjoy the event without worrying about long journeys home, late trains or finding a taxi at the same time as everyone else.

Big event weekends can book up quickly, so it’s worth looking early, especially if you’re visiting for the Colchester Castle Summer Series or a major festival weekend.

Use the InColchester App accommodation directory to find somewhere central and make your stay part of the experience.

Getting to Castle Park 🌳

Colchester city centre is compact and easy to explore on foot, but it is worth remembering that parts of the city are on a hill, so comfortable shoes are a very good idea.

If you’re travelling by train, Colchester Town Station is closest to the city centre and Castle Park. Colchester Station is also walkable, but allow a little more time. If you’re travelling by bus, there are several routes into the city centre, with stops close to shops, restaurants and event routes.

Driving in? Plan your parking before you set off. Colchester has city centre car parks, and for some Castle Park events there may be event parking available to purchase in advance. Spaces can be limited on big event days, so check the official event information and leave plenty of time.

The Park and Ride can also be a useful option if you want to avoid driving right into the centre. It’s based near the A12 at Junction 28, making it a practical choice for visitors coming from outside Colchester.

Parking tips for busy event days 🚘

Parking on major summer event days can be busier than usual, so a little planning goes a long way.

Check the event page before you travel, as some events may offer specific parking tickets or guidance. If you’re using a city centre car park, check the closing time, payment method and walking route to the park before leaving your car.

If you’re using MiPermit, make sure the app is set up before you arrive so you’re not trying to download it while standing in a car park with low signal. It can also be useful if your visit runs longer than expected.

If you’re travelling with someone who has accessibility requirements, check accessible parking options in advance and make sure you have any required booking confirmation or Blue Badge details ready.

Accessibility and inclusive planning ♿️

Everyone should be able to enjoy summer events in Colchester and planning ahead can make a big difference.

For larger Castle Park events, check the official accessibility information before booking tickets. Some events offer accessible viewing areas, wheelchair platform tickets, mobility tickets, essential companion tickets, accessible toilets, accessible bar lanes and support from on-site accessibility teams.

Because Castle Park is an outdoor greenfield site, the ground may be uneven in places and conditions can change depending on the weather. If rain is forecast, some grassy areas may become muddy. If it’s very hot, shade, hydration and rest points become even more important.

If you are Deaf or hard of hearing, check whether BSL interpretation is available for the event you are attending. Some performances may have BSL interpretation already planned, while others may require a request in advance.

If you’re bringing medication, medical equipment, or need to bring food or drink for medical reasons, check the event’s policy before arriving. Some items may need prior approval or supporting documentation.

If you’re unsure, contact the event organiser before the day. It is always better to ask early than to find out at the gate.

Keeping cool in the summer heat 🚰

British summer has two settings: grey cardigan weather or “why is my phone overheating?”

On warm event days, heat safety matters. You may be standing, walking, dancing, queuing and spending hours outside, so look after yourself and the people you’re with.

Wear light, comfortable clothing, bring sun cream, wear a hat or sunglasses if you need them, and try to spend time in the shade where possible. Drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty, and be mindful of alcohol in hot weather.

For many Castle Park events, you may be allowed to bring one sealed water bottle or one empty reusable bottle, with refill points available inside. Always check the specific event rules before you pack, as policies can vary.

Watch out for signs of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, headache, nausea, cramps, heavy sweating, feeling very thirsty or feeling unusually tired. If someone feels unwell, move them somewhere cooler, help them drink water and find welfare or first aid support.

If someone seems confused, loses consciousness, has a seizure, has very hot skin, or is still unwell after cooling down, treat it as an emergency and call 999.

What to bring with you 🎟️

Every event will have its own rules, so check the official information before you travel. As a general guide, it’s worth thinking about:

  • Your ticket, phone and a portable charger
  • A payment card or digital wallet, as many event sites are cashless
  • ID if needed
  • Sun cream, sunglasses and a hat
  • A light layer for the evening
  • Medication in its original packaging if required
  • A small bag that meets the event’s bag policy
  • An empty reusable water bottle if permitted
  • Comfortable shoes

Avoid bringing large bags, chairs, umbrellas, glass, professional cameras, alcohol, food or anything that could slow you down at security, unless the event has clearly confirmed it is allowed.

Staying safe during and after the event 💜

Big summer events should feel exciting, not stressful.

Agree a meeting point with your group in case you get separated. Keep your phone charged, look after your belongings, and don’t leave drinks unattended. If something doesn’t feel right, speak to event staff, security, welfare teams or venue staff nearby.

Colchester city centre also has a strong focus on night-time safety. Many venues are aware of initiatives such as Ask for Angela, and the SOS Bus is available in the city centre on many busy nights for anyone who feels unwell, vulnerable, lost or in need of support.

The best nights out are the ones where everyone gets home safely, so plan your journey back before you arrive. Check last trains, book taxis early where possible, and don’t rely on “we’ll figure it out later” when thousands of people may be leaving at the same time.

Make the most of Colchester while you’re here ✨

Summer events bring people into the city, but Colchester is worth exploring before the gates open and after the music ends.

Take a walk through the city centre, visit the shops, enjoy the independent businesses, stop for coffee, book a meal, or spend some time discovering the historic streets around Castle Park.

Whether you’re here for a festival, a concert, a family day out or a full weekend away, there’s plenty happening beyond the event itself.

See you in the city this summer. 👋
