The cen­tre of Colch­ester’s town cen­tre is home to the siz­able, beau­ti­ful, and well-kept Vic­to­ri­an park known as Cas­tle Park. The park not only offers the ide­al back­drop for a brief stroll, a breath of fresh air, or a pic­nic, but also for a wide vari­ety of activ­i­ties like shows, fes­ti­vals, and concerts.

A vis­it to Colch­ester Cas­tle is bet­ter than ever before with inter­ac­tive dis­plays and star exhibits, like the Colch­ester Glad­i­a­tor Vase and Fen­wick Hoard of Roman treasure. 

Have a go at build­ing a Nor­man arch­way, dress­ing as an Iron Age Britain or steer­ing a Roman char­i­ot. Be wowed as a large scale pro­jec­tion trans­forms the east wall with light and sound. 

Tours, led by expert guides, are offered dai­ly and can take you down into the Roman vaults and up onto the Cas­tle roof.

Sit­u­at­ed down Queen Street in Colch­ester Town Cen­tre, The Silk Road has now been oper­at­ing as a fam­i­ly run busi­ness since 2007. The venue now hosts four styl­ish bars, one of which spe­cialis­es in fresh fruit cock­tails. There is a heat­ed ter­race, over 25 flavours of shisha as well as a Pool & Snook­er Club. Avail­able for pri­vate hire.

Live music, plays, com­e­dy shows & oth­er per­for­mances in a for­mer church, with a beer selection.

The Town Hall, set in a pop­u­lar town cen­tre loca­tion, is a beau­ti­ful and pres­ti­gious build­ing rich with his­to­ry and is the third Town Hall to have been built on this site. The first Town Hall, known as the Moot Hall, was built around 1160 and remained for 700 years.

The need for exten­sive accom­mo­da­tion was required after this time, and sub­se­quent­ly, the Vic­to­ri­an Town Hall was com­plet­ed in 1845. This design last­ed but fifty years as again the Coun­cil had out­grown the facilities.

The last Baroque design, which is the cur­rent mod­el, was com­plet­ed by John Belch­er in 1897 and opened in 1902. The promi­nent 162ft Vic­to­ri­an tow­er was pre­sent­ed by indus­tri­al­ist James Pax­man with a stat­ue at the top of St Hele­na, Colchester’s patron saint.

SPACE’s first out-of-Lon­don stu­dios, SPACE Colch­ester was opened in Feb­ru­ary 2017 offer­ing 40+ cre­ative stu­dios, a work­space facil­i­ty and cul­tur­al venue at 37 Queen Street, Colch­ester, Essex. Set in Colch­ester Old Police Sta­tion, a list­ed build­ing in the heart of town, SPACE Colch­ester pro­vides the local com­mu­ni­ty with 12,000 sq ft of cre­ative space, co-work­ing desk space, work­shops and train­ing pro­grammes, and show­cas­ing facil­i­ties for the cre­ative and dig­i­tal indus­tries. Locat­ed close to First Site, The Minories and St Botolph’s Pri­o­ry with Colch­ester Town sta­tion near­by. In 2018, the build­ing won a RICS Award for Best Regen­er­a­tion Project in part­ner­ship with Colch­ester Bor­ough Coun­cil and Essex Coun­ty Council.
