Colchesters Rev Simpkins is a sinner-songwriter, folkster, gospeller and a priest in the Church of England. He returns to play in Colchester for the first time in two years, having released the critically acclaimed album and book Big Sea during the pandemic. Written around a time of illness, Big Sea is an exuberant and hope-filled celebration of the peaks and troughs of life and death through vivid songs about east coast creeks, shattering storms, mystic pelicans and the Colchester martyrs. Performing songs from Big Sea and the earlier Rev albums Babbler & Crow and Lions, as well as the close-harmony folk gospel of the Simpkins Family album Ragged Gospel Hope, Matt will have some old friends in tow for this evening of melodic, moving and colourful songs. Now the priest in charge of St Leonards Church in Lexden, Matt's musical career has seen him performing with underground band FuzzFace, gospel-fiddle duo Sons of Joy, and collaborating with the remaining members of the Small Faces to reconstruct their LP Ogdens Nut Gone Flake.
Profits from this performance will go to support the volunteer-run, community radio station, Colne Radio.
