There are so many things to do in Colchester this Christmas, from special grottos to excellent entertainment. And we know it can take ages looking through all of the different things happening so we have compiled them in one place! Take a look at what's happening in Colchester this Christmas below.

LATE WEDNESDAYS

Why not treat yourself to a special after school activity with Late Wednesdays this December. Head into town for three nights of unmissable events and entertainment to put you in the festive mood. Meet the Grinch roaming around town plus live music and Christmas carols.

There are three hubs for the Late Wednesday events - Crouch Street (near Tesco), Sir Isaacs Walk and Balkerne Gate (outside Mercury Theatre). All entertainment is completely free plus the North Pole Post Office will be open until 8pm to help keep the kids entertained. Some of your favourite retail shops will be open until late too.

MEET SANTA

There a some great Christmas Grottos in Colchester this year. Christmas Grottos are always very popular so make sure you book early to avoid any disappointment!

Meet Santa at Fenwick

Step inside the magical grotto upstairs in Fenwick to meet Santa. Tickets are £10 and Include a gift. Tickets can be booked online.

Meet Santa at the Castle

What could be a more magical backdrop for meeting Santa than an ancient Castle. Tickets are £8.95 and include a gift. Tickets are booked over the phone.


Missed out on booking or don't fancy a grotto experience? Why not write a letter to Santa at the North Pole Post Office instead.

EAT DRINK AND BE MERRY

We are spoilt for choice for food and drink in Colchester. Whether it's a quick bite to eat on your lunch break or a full sit down meal with all the family there's something for everyone.

Why not pop into Victoria Yum for a sweet treat like a handmade mince pie, or into Starbucks for a festive flavoured coffee. A lot of pubs and restaurants have also got special Christmas menus on at the moment too like The Castle Inn or The George.

KEEP THE KIDS ENTERTAINED

North Pole Post Office

Something magical is coming to town with the North Pole Post Office. Why not drop down to the North Pole Post Office to have a go at the giant colouring wall, games and writing a postcard to Santa. There is a small entry fee of £2 per child. The North Pole Post Office is also a hub for handing in your completed Christmas trails for a small prize.

The Jolly Christmas Postman

The Jolly Christmas Postman has found his way to the Mercury Theatre. Join the Jolly Christmas Postman on his final delivery of the year as he visits well-loved characters such as Miss Riding Hood, Humpty Dumpty and many others, with a gift for all this Christmas time.

Get your Skates on

The ice rink at Firstsite is back and better than ever this year. Tickets are released every Thursday for the week ahead so if you miss out one week make sure to check back. Tickets are £6.50 and the rink is open from Thursday the 9th of December.

Aladdin Panto at Mercury Theatre

Make all your Christmas wishes come true with a trip to the Mercury’s magical pantomime, Aladdin! Journey with us to distant shores where the penniless Aladdin dreams of winning the heart of the rebellious Princess Jasmine. When he is tempted by an evil sorcerer with the promise of untold riches, our young hero finds himself trapped in the Cave of Wonders with nothing but his wits and a battered old lamp. Little does he know that it’s contents will change his life for ever.

Jack and the Beanstalk Panto Headgate Theatre

Headgate Theatre presents a fast-moving, up-to-date retelling of this classic folk tale about brave young Jack Nimble, Daisy the dancing cow and a life and death struggle with the cannibal giant Mr. Bigg. Will love triumph over greed? Can Greenville be saved from the forces of evil that threaten to swallow up the village and everyone in it? All will be revealed as our traditional English panto unfolds! Suitable for all the family.

Christmas Trail map

1st December 2021 - 5th January 2022

Santa's cheeky little Elves need to write a letter but all of the things they need to do so have been lost around the town! Can you help Santa's Elves find their items throughout the town? You'll have your trusty map with you along the way. Hand in your completed map to Mercury Theatre, The North Pole Post Office, or Holytrees Museum. You can also pick up your maps from these locations or download and print a copy through our website.

Open Evening at the Castle

As an extra special festive treat, Colchester Castle’s FREE Christmas Open Evening is back for 2021. Come along and soak up the Christmas atmosphere with entertainment and festive fun! You can also meet Father Christmas in his special open evening grotto.

There are some great parking offers this festive season in Colchester. Get free parking from 3pm on Wednesday 8th, 15th and 22nd of December. And free Park and Ride every Saturday from 12pm throughout November & December.
